May 30th, 2008

Editorial: Mohit Goyal

Indian Premier League has taken everybody by storm. The amount of fresh talent that’s been exposed would lead people to believe that there may be many new faces in team India. But the fact of the matter is that, only 15 or 16 players can be selected in the team and the players who were already there and there about have performed really well. There might be just a few inclusions in the batting and in the spin bowling departments.

Looking at the eight teams and the Indian players who have been the best in each its interesting to find that they are already in the national team.

Injured Kumble cannot play opening match for Bangalore Royal Challengers

April 16th, 2008

Anil Kumble - Indian Test Captain may miss the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League for his team, the Bangalore Royal Challengers, due to his groin injury. Reports - Sify.

“He (injured Kumble) probably might miss the first game definitely,” Royal Challengers’ skipper Rahul Dravid said, adding, another team member, Nathan Bracken would be able to join the squad only in the first week of May.

Given the twenty20 format, Dravid said the tournament was “very, very competitive” and therefore there were no favourites. “I think there is no clear favourite in the tournament”, he said.

On his comment made in Chennai over auctioning in team selection for IPL, Dravid said it was an “off the cuff” remark that was taken out of context, and then went on to support the IPL concept.

“It’s a great opportunity for domestic cricketers”, he said. “It’s a domestic tournament with international flavour”.

The team’s manager, Martin Crowe, said the T20 format would “speed up” the one-day games and test matches. This format is now “sitting along side” the other two versions “comfortably”, he said.

Both Kumble and Little Master will be very much missed by the cricket fans when the two teams meet next Sunday.

First Test against South Africa - Rahul Dravid eyes 10,000-run club entry

March 26th, 2008

India take on South Africa in
Chennai on Today as skipper Anil Kumble seeks a first slot in Test rankings and key batsman Rahul Dravid chases the 80 rund he needs to make it to the 10,000-run club.

Rahul Dravid will become the only third Indian after Sunil Gavaskar
and Sachin Tendulkar to enter the elite-10,000-run club — And only the
sixth in the world– if he takes 80 runs.

Anil Kumble, 37, has all ready set the ball on batsmen’s court
saying India always took advantage of big scores on home soil. For
that, his Karnataka and Bangalore Royal Challengers mate Rahul Dravid
along with Sachin Tendulkar will be the key.

In the bowling department, Harbhajan Singh, Rudra Pratap Singh and
Shanthakumaran Sreesanth will give him company. And Sachin Tendulkar
can bowl a few overs too. Sourav Ganguly is another option for a few
overs.

And its only incidental that a South African is taking over the
Indian team’s coahing duty when the team takes on South Africa itself.

Gary Kirsten will have to pitch in with all his experience to take
on a new-llok South African side, with fresh pacer Dale Steyn looking
to trouble the Indians.Dale Steyn and Mark Boucher also will play alongside Rahul Dravid and
Anil Kumble for Bangalore Challengers in the DLF IPL Twenty20.
