Indian Premier League Match Preview

Rajasthan Royals vs Mumbai Indians at Jaipur

Indians will have to win this match this match to keep their semi final chances under their own control. Else they will need Deccan who are not in that good a form to beat Chennai. Royals on the other hand would not want this dangerous Mumbai side to advance and would definitely like to make like difficult for them by beating them here.

Men at the Helm

Shane Warne has been simply superb throughout the league and everything he’s touched has turned gold. He would to be looking to try out a few combinations before the knock out stages start. Sachin on the other hand has been calm and cool but not been as sharp and quick as required for such a fast paced game. He mismanaged the distribution of overs in the match against Punjab and the team selection too has lacked thought. He has banked too much on the opponents’ weaknesses rather than his team’s strength.

Breaking News - Harbhajan ban extended by another five matches

May 14th, 2008

After going through the report submitted yesterday by Nanavati, BCCI has given its verdict today for Harbhajan Singh by extending his 11 match ban to 16 matches - that is an additional 5 match. BCCi also warned him of a life ban if he fails to mend his ways in playing the game in its true spirit.

This effectively means that Harbhajan will be out of the Bangladesh Tour apart from the ongoing IPL tournament. He has also forfeited his entire match fees for IPL for the slapping incident involving Sreesanth.

Sreesanth however was spared of any reprimand from BBCI - which established that the incident was totally unprovoked.

Ponting takes a dig at Harbhajan

May 12th, 2008

“The slapping incident was him dealing with a guy that he has probably played 20 Tests with,” Ponting was quoted as saying in The Herald Sun. “After this latest issue in India, I think people should be making their own judgments about Harbhajan as they can see his true face now. He has again done something wrong.”

Referring to earlier controversies with Harbhajan, Ponting also said that every minor error was blown out of proportion by the media.

Harbhajan slapped Kings XI Punjab pacer Sreesanth after his team Mumbai Indians lost in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Harbhajan was banned from playing in the IPL this season and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also conducting a separate inquiry into the incident.

After a Sydney Test marred by on-field confrontations, Ponting was accused of “turning a group of professional cricketers into a pack of wild dogs” by an eminent journalist. The same scribe also labeled Ponting arrogant and called for him to be replaced as captain.

Ponting said his team had several lapses of judgment and also made some minor errors, but claims they were blown out of proportion.

He said he thought the thing that happened was that every time there was a minor error it was turned into something that was a lot bigger than it was.

Frustrated Harbhajan slaps Sreesanth - should IPL ban him ?

April 26th, 2008

A frustrated Harbhajan Singh got entangled in yet another controversy after allegedly slapping his Indian team colleague and IPL Mohali (Kings XI Punjab) paceman S Sreesanth during their Indian Premier League encounter yesterday.

Yuvraj Singh captain of Kings XI Punjab is reportedly planning to lodge a complaint against the off-spinner, who later apologised to the paceman in the dressing room of the Punjab team.

BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said the board would wait for the report from the team management before deciding on the future course of action.

Harbhajan, leading Mumbai Indians side, allegedly slapped Sreesanth when latter said something to him which the off-spinner found offensive.

Sreesanth was seen crying bitterly on the ground at the end of the IPL match, which his team won by 66 runs.

While Harbhajan kept mum on the issue during the post-match conference, Sreesanth tried to play down the incident.

“It is normal. Nothing serious happened. It is all in the game. I am fine. We will still be part of the national team,” Sreesanth said before leaving from the stadium.

As Sreesanth came to board the bus to return to the team hotel, waiting media mobbed him to listen to his version.

Harbhajan avoided the issue and said - “Can we have questions on just cricket,” when asked about what happened between him and Sreesanth.

Mumbai Indians coach Lalchand Rajput also requested media to restrict their questions to just cricket.

“This is really an ugly incident. You do not want to see such things off the field specially after such a win. I am pretty upset at what has happened. This is totally unacceptable,” Yuvraj Singh said apparently criticizing Harbhajan Singh.

Yuvraj also said - “I do not know what exactly happened but one does not want to see such things happening.”

Kings XI coach Tom Moody was also visibly upset by the incident and termed as “unacceptable” Harbhajan’s behavior.

“At the end of the day, players shake hands. But today saw more that from Harbhajan and Sreesanth. It is unacceptable behavior and I am sure officials will take of note.

“The positive thing is that Harbhajan had a long chat with Sreesanth. But I am not sure what ramifications this incident will have,” Moody said.

Upset after his team’s third successive defeat, Bhajji also looked unhappy with his teammates.

When asked if the task of captaincy was difficult - a visibly irritated Harbhajan said “When you lose nothing seems to be okay.” he said angrily when asked if captaincy was tough.”I don’t like losing. When you lose, you don’t feel happy.”

All said and done this is not an acceptable behavior coming from the Captain of an IPL team. He sure requires to be disciplined properly and action taken by the officials. More so it also puts a strong question on his capabilities to lead a team when he himself has no control over his emotions with also the loss of three vital matches with the last one by an overwhelming 66 runs! We think a better example will be to suspend this player immediately and set an example for the rest of the team which will sent out a clear message to everyone that such shameful actions are not tolerated.

Yuvraj Singh who took a marvelous catch and also led the team with finnese finally managed to gift the owners Priety Zinta and Ness wadia a hearty smile.

Mumbai Indians was bot all comfortable with this match. They are yet to win any match as of now and have lost in all the three matches played so far. The absence of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was duly felt by all Mumbai Indians supporters though it is really difficult to say whether he even could have saved his team today from such an all out bowling attack. The only good news for team is Sachin Tendulkar will be available from the next match onwards as per confirmation reaching us.

    Score:

Kings XI Punjab - 182 for 10 in 20 overs.
